• Portable Heating Pad: A lifesaver for chilly nights in a tent or car camping. It’s rechargeable so you can charge it with a portable charger or in your car and it lasts for about 3 hours.
• Heat Warmers: I always like to keep these on hand as me and my friends get cold a lot on our adventures.

• Targhee IV Keen Hiking boots: I just got these boots and they are definitely an upgrade from my previous ones. I love the roomy toe box and the grip on them. I recently took them hiking around southern Utah and they held up really well so far!
• Hiking Gaiters: Gaiters are a must and these are pretty affordable and cute for hiking. These are great for keeping mud, dirt and snow out of boots.
• Waterfly Packable Backpack: This bag is perfect to take for travel or in your backpacking backpack for a small packable day pack. It folds down into a pouch and holds up pretty well.
• Travel Backpack: This backpack is my new favorite one! I recently flew with a budget airline and it met their personal item requirement size. The crazy thing is I was able to fit my hiking clothes, mini drone and a small camera in it. I will use this on future trips as I love the way it opens like a carry-on and the amount of items you can fit into it, especially with some compression sacks!
• Compression Sack: A must for compressing your sleeping bag, and clothes during travel. These bags can compress a lot of clothes down so it’s perfect for the mindful adventurer.
• Packing Cubes: Another great thing to have is packing cubes! I use them while travelling, backpacking and car camping as I hate when things are all over the place. These are so helpful for that and would make the perfect gift!
• SD Card Case: I finally got one of these and it’s a lifesaver as a photographer for when I need all my SD cards in one place. If you have micro SD cards or SD cards this is pretty handy as you will never use them!
• Cord Pouch: A cute pouch to organize all your chargers and cables so you don’t lose them or get them tangled.
• Mini umbrella: It’s nice to keep this on hand or travel with as it doesn’t take up space and is a great outdoor gift idea.
• Toiletry Bag: This is perfect for car camping or this open-top Cosmetic bag is perfect for travel!

• Patagonia Granite Crest Jacket: I love my jacket and this is one of the best outdoor gift ideas for women as the fit is feminine and it doesn’t feel like a rain jacket> I am surprised how lightweight it is and how it packs down small in my backpack. I love that it doesn’t sound crunchy compared to other rain jackets which is a huge bonus plus all the pockets!

• Sun Hat: Protect your face and head from the sun’s rays. When I am not wearing a cap and go somewhere hot, I always pull one of these out as they protect my face and lips from getting sunburnt. It’s so lightweight and I love the style of them. It’s perfect for travel and hiking.
• Furtalk Beanie: These beanies are well made and I love the color options. I have several of these and use them for hiking, and for sleeping while camping. I have had them for several years and they wash and hold up well.

• Car Mattress: This is the perfect mattress for car camping! I own the lighter one and I love the color. It fits easily in my SUV and comes with a pump, making it easy to inflate fast. It is also affordable compared to other options. I also love the soft brushed material it is made of.

Granite Falls

Granite Falls is located in Deep Cove in North Vancouver, and it is near the end of the Indian Arm. Paddling to Granite Falls is a really fun adventure if you have paddling experience as it is a longer trip (around 3-6 hours). If you are a beginner or looking for something shorter I highly recommend paddling to Twin Islands and camping first as it is located before Granite Falls and you will get a feel of the adventure. Check out my detailed Twin Islands post here.

Deep Cove Kayak Rental

If you don’t already have your own kayak then you will need to rent one. I recommend the journey be done on a kayak versus a paddle board as it is a very long paddle and you will have your camping gear with you as well. It is an 18km paddle to Granite Falls. While I paddle-boarded to Twin Islands, I chose to Kayak to Granite Falls for a faster journey, as well as my gear was safely stowed away and protected by the water in the kayak!

Thankfully there is a kayak rental right at Deep Cove, called Deep Cove Kayak Rental where you can rent an overnight kayak for the trip. Like me you may need to call them to book it over the phone as online there are options for day use only. We rented 2 person kayaks for our group and the price was around $200 CAD after tax for 1 overnight.

Getting to Granite Falls you start at Deep Cove Park, next to the Deep Cove Kayak Rental. Once you have all your gear secured, you are ready to launch your kayak and continue paddling along the Indian Arm.

I have included the route below. The route is pretty straightforward forward you continue paddling past Twin Islands and up the arm. We stayed on the left side to avoid the boats passing by. Sometimes the waves can be a lot so it is better to stick to the sides.

Along the way, you will pass a waterfall on your left side called Silver Falls. It is totally worth seeing it on your way in or out if you have the time! There is also another campground before Granite Falls on the left side after the falls called Bishop Creek Marine Campground. You have the choice to stop here if you are too tired to make it to Granite Falls or if the campground is already full. Once you pass Bishop Marine make sure you paddle to the right side of Croker Island which is the island in the middle of the ocean between the two, so you don’t miss Granite Falls. See the map below for the waypoints.

Overnight Camping at Granite Falls

It’s a truly immersive experience, camping overnight in Granite Falls. It is completely free to camp here, remember to practice leave no trace! You get to hear the soothing falls all night as you sleep right beside them!

Find a secluded spot (there are many here but can be taken up if you arrive late) set up your tent, and fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the falls. Wake up to the crisp air and the sight of the sun rising over the trees. This is an experience that will stay with you forever, connecting you to the raw beauty of the great outdoors.

There are bear cache bins and outhouses near the campground. Remember to put all your food items into the bear cache before you call it a night, as there are bears in the area to be mindful of.

If you do arrive late or are not able to make it all the way to Granite Falls to find a camping spot, then there is another campground area called Bishop Creek which is on the other side of Croker Island, before Granite Falls. You can opt to camp there instead if you are too tired to continue or are unable to find a camping spot at Granite Falls.

Hiking in Granite Falls

You don’t really need to hike to see the beauty of Granite Falls, as they are right there through the trees. But to hike to get to the Upper Falls and the swimming pools at the top you would need to follow the marked trail up. You will pass private property (don’t worry as long as you are respectful it’s OK!)

Please note that to reach the upper falls and swimming pools you will need to climb over big rocks.

Water Sources at Granite Falls

The only water source at Granite Falls is from the falls itself, note that you will need to bring a water filter/purification tablets. We opted to carry all our water in our kayaks (about 4 liters for drinking and cooking).

What to Pack

When preparing for your adventure in Granite Falls, it’s essential to pack the right gear. Here are some items to consider bringing:

Sandals: easy to put on and take off at camp and helpful when you are on the kayak, you can stow your other shoes away to put on later.

Lightweight and quick-drying clothing: opt for breathable fabrics that wick away moisture to keep you comfortable throughout your paddle and overnight trip.

Dry Bag: kayaking on the water can be unpredictable with wind and waves from other watercraft. Make sure to stow away your things in a dry bag so that they will stay dry if water does get into the kayak.

Camping gear: If you plan on camping overnight, make sure to pack a tent, sleeping bag, and camping stove.

Insect repellent: Keep those pesky bugs at bay with a reliable insect repellent.

First aid kit: Always be prepared for any minor injuries or emergencies that may occur along the way.

Make sure to take a sun hat, proper UV protective clothing, and sunscreen. Remember to keep reapplying as you can get sunburned more easily on the water.

Things to Know

Before embarking on your Granite Falls kayaking overnight adventure, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Leave No Trace: Respect the natural environment by leaving it as you found it. Pack out all your garbage and dispose of it properly.

2. Wildlife: While Granite Falls is home to a variety of wildlife including bears, it’s important to put all food away from your tent and into the bear cache bins.

3. Tide Schedule: Check the local tide schedule so you can plan your paddling adventure. Usually, the tide is calmer in the morning so it is easier to plan for an earlier paddle to leave before all the boats are out on the water versus at noon when the water will be more choppy.

4. Weather Conditions: Be prepared for changing weather conditions, especially if you’re camping overnight. Keep an eye on the forecast and pack accordingly.

Summer has arrived and you just got a new paddle board or are planning to rent one in Vancouver. Porteau Cove

Located near Squamish, Porteau Cove is an amazing place to paddle out from the beach or boat launch. You can really escape the crowds and enjoy the mountains while on your paddleboard. I would recommend wearing a life jacket as the ocean water here can be wavy especially with wind and boats going by. This is an amazing area to paddle for sunset though and you should definitely check it out!

Alouette Lake

Alouette Lake, located in Golden Ears Provincial Park in Maple Ridge, is one of the best lakes for paddleboarding around Vancouver. 

There is no hiking required to reach this lake. You can drive to the parking area for the beach and get your paddle board ready for the water. Here, the water is calm with a restricted area for boats passing, so you don’t need to worry about big waves. This makes it the perfect place to practice paddle boarding as a beginner. Leisurely paddle here or paddle across to the marina access campsite and enjoy the beach there before you paddle back. This park has some stunning mountain views and you can enjoy them right from your paddleboard.

North Beach Trail

Also located in Golden Ears Provincial Park, in Maple Ridge. You would need to park at the Gold Creek parking lot. The trail is located across the parking lot in the beginning, near the first washrooms.

Paddleboarding at North Beach Trail requires a bit of hiking into the trail to go paddleboarding. There is also a beach located at the end of the trail. The trail has plenty of stops along the river for both swimming and paddleboarding. On a bright sunny day, the water looks crystal clear and green. This makes it picturesque for paddle boarding and taking a refreshing dip! 

Widgeon Falls

Located in Pitt Lake, in Pitt Meadows, this paddle is worth the day trip as you paddle to reach Widgeon Falls.

Paddling Widgeon Falls is an adventure in itself. To get to the trailhead, you must paddle, canoe, or use a kayak to access it. The trailhead is located by the campsite. You may choose to spend a night there where you can also hike to Widgeon Lake. Widgeon lake a longer hike than the falls. I recommend starting your trip early as the parking lot fills up by 9 am on a nice sunny day. 

Starting at Grant Narrows Access, you start to paddle towards Widgeon Slough, crossing the lake on your way. You may encounter some boats passing by on occasion. Once you pass this portion, it is a calm paddle into Widgeon Slough. As the Slough becomes narrower, the water may become shallow in some parts. There will be signs along the way to help guide you. It took us an hour to paddle each way. 

You can see some wildlife on the journey as well as the peaks of Golden Ears in front of you. Soon you will reach the campsite on the left. Pull up your paddle board and start the hike from the campsite.

Hiking the Trail

There are two trails to get to the falls, one being the actual trail and then the logging road. The trail is forested and quite scenic on the way. It would be best to take the logging road back to make it faster. The hike there is pretty quick and fairly easy. Once you get to the falls, you can walk up the river to find a spot to relax or look for the smaller pools to swim. 

Deep Cove

Deep Cove is a picturesque spot located on the North Shore of Vancouver. It’s a bit further from the city center, but the stunning views and calm waters make it worth the trip. The cove is surrounded by mountains and forests, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. There are several rental shops in the area, as well as a park with picnic tables and a beach. It’s a great spot for both beginners and experienced paddlers.

Jug Island

*2023 Update* Note the trail is currently closed for construction

Jug Island is located in Belcarra Provincial Park. You can paddle from Deep Cove to Jug Island or take the trail from Belcarra Park to the beach with your paddle board.

If you choose to hike the Jug Island Trail, it is around 40 minutes one way. However, the trail has stairs with an incline so it would be quite the workout to hike with your paddleboard if you are up for the challenge. If you get to the beach, you will see that it is totally worth it! You can paddle out to the shore, take in the surrounding mountains and Deep Cove from afar as well as Jug Island right in front of you. 

If you choose to start from Deep Cove, you can cross the Indian Arm to Jug Island. Paddleboards can be rented from Deep Cove, located in North Vancouver. Here the water is calm around the cove, so it is the perfect place for beginners! 

Sasamat Lake

Sasamat Lake is a popular paddle-boarding spot located in Port Moody, just a short drive from Vancouver. This calm lake is perfect for beginners or those looking for a relaxing paddle.
