Granite Falls

Granite Falls is located in Deep Cove in North Vancouver, and it is near the end of the Indian Arm. Paddling to Granite Falls is a really fun adventure if you have paddling experience as it is a longer trip (around 3-6 hours). If you are a beginner or looking for something shorter I highly recommend paddling to Twin Islands and camping first as it is located before Granite Falls and you will get a feel of the adventure. Deep Cove Kayak Rental

If you don’t already have your own kayak then you will need to rent one. I recommend the journey be done on a kayak versus a paddle board as it is a very long paddle and you will have your camping gear with you as well. It is an 18km paddle to Granite Falls. While I paddle-boarded to Twin Islands, I chose to Kayak to Granite Falls for a faster journey, as well as my gear was safely stowed away and protected by the water in the kayak!

Thankfully there is a kayak rental right at Deep Cove, called Deep Cove Kayak Rental where you can rent an overnight kayak for the trip. Like me you may need to call them to book it over the phone as online there are options for day use only. We rented 2 person kayaks for our group and the price was around $200 CAD after tax for 1 overnight.

Getting to Granite Falls you start at Deep Cove Park, next to the Deep Cove Kayak Rental. Once you have all your gear secured, you are ready to launch your kayak and continue paddling along the Indian Arm.

I have included the route below. The route is pretty straightforward forward you continue paddling past Twin Islands and up the arm. We stayed on the left side to avoid the boats passing by. Sometimes the waves can be a lot so it is better to stick to the sides.

Along the way, you will pass a waterfall on your left side called Silver Falls. It is totally worth seeing it on your way in or out if you have the time! There is also another campground before Granite Falls on the left side after the falls called Bishop Creek Marine Campground. You have the choice to stop here if you are too tired to make it to Granite Falls or if the campground is already full. Once you pass Bishop Marine make sure you paddle to the right side of Croker Island which is the island in the middle of the ocean between the two, so you don’t miss Granite Falls. Overnight Camping at Granite Falls

It’s a truly immersive experience, camping overnight in Granite Falls. It is completely free to camp here, remember to practice leave no trace! You get to hear the soothing falls all night as you sleep right beside them!

Find a secluded spot (there are many here but can be taken up if you arrive late) set up your tent, and fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the falls. Wake up to the crisp air and the sight of the sun rising over the trees. This is an experience that will stay with you forever, connecting you to the raw beauty of the great outdoors.

There are bear cache bins and outhouses near the campground. Remember to put all your food items into the bear cache before you call it a night, as there are bears in the area to be mindful of.

If you do arrive late or are not able to make it all the way to Granite Falls to find a camping spot, then there is another campground area called Bishop Creek which is on the other side of Croker Island, before Granite Falls. You can opt to camp there instead if you are too tired to continue or are unable to find a camping spot at Granite Falls.

Hiking in Granite Falls

You don’t really need to hike to see the beauty of Granite Falls, as they are right there through the trees. But to hike to get to the Upper Falls and the swimming pools at the top you would need to follow the marked trail up. You will pass private property (don’t worry as long as you are respectful it’s OK!)

Please note that to reach the upper falls and swimming pools you will need to climb over big rocks.

Water Sources at Granite Falls

The only water source at Granite Falls is from the falls itself, note that you will need to bring a water filter/purification tablets. We opted to carry all our water in our kayaks (about 4 liters for drinking and cooking).

What to Pack

When preparing for your adventure in Granite Falls, it’s essential to pack the right gear. Here are some items to consider bringing:

Sandals: easy to put on and take off at camp and helpful when you are on the kayak, you can stow your other shoes away to put on later.

Lightweight and quick-drying clothing: opt for breathable fabrics that wick away moisture to keep you comfortable throughout your paddle and overnight trip.

Dry Bag: kayaking on the water can be unpredictable with wind and waves from other watercraft. Make sure to stow away your things in a dry bag so that they will stay dry if water does get into the kayak.

Camping gear: If you plan on camping overnight, make sure to pack a tent, sleeping bag, and camping stove.

Insect repellent: Keep those pesky bugs at bay with a reliable insect repellent.

First aid kit: Always be prepared for any minor injuries or emergencies that may occur along the way.

Make sure to take a sun hat, proper UV protective clothing, and sunscreen. Remember to keep reapplying as you can get sunburned more easily on the water.

Things to Know

Before embarking on your Granite Falls kayaking overnight adventure, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Leave No Trace: Respect the natural environment by leaving it as you found it. Pack out all your garbage and dispose of it properly.

3. Tide Schedule: Check the local tide schedule so you can plan your paddling adventure. Usually, the tide is calmer in the morning so it is easier to plan for an earlier paddle to leave before all the boats are out on the water versus at noon when the water will be more choppy.

4. Weather Conditions: Be prepared for changing weather conditions, especially if you’re camping overnight. Keep an eye on the forecast and pack accordingly.

While paddleboarding in Vancouver can be fun, I recently discovered this area and can admit if you’re seeking an unforgettable water adventure, Twin Islands is the perfect destination for you!

This location offers a combination of paddling, camping, and stunning ocean views that will leave you in awe and it is definitely worth the trip. This adventure is perfect for beginner paddlers or those wanting to explore the Indian Arm further from Deep Cove by water.

Introduction to Twin Islands and it’s Location

Twin Islands is a breathtaking destination located off the coast of Deep Cove, in the Indian Arm. While it is one island, when the tide comes in it separates the mini part of the island into the small south island. The camping designated area is located on the northern side of the island and you are only allowed to camp in this part. This island is the perfect last minute escape from the hustle and bustle of the crowds on sunny days or weekends in Deep Cove. 

With the right amount of effort and time you can safely paddle to Twin Islands for your next camping adventure. This is a great short trip to practice for Granite Falls, which is located further up into the Indian Arm. Whether you’re looking to paddle, camp, or simply soak up the sun, Twin Islands is the ultimate destination for your next adventure.

How to Get to Twin Islands by Kayaking or Paddleboarding

To reach Twin Islands, kayaking or paddleboarding is the best option. You can rent equipment from local rental shop in Deep Cove or bring your own (If you are looking for budget friendly ones check out some here!). We brought our own paddleboards and loaded all our camping gear onto them. 

It’s best to start as early as you can so that you can find somewhere to park in Deep Cove as well as make sure there are less boats on the water. We went on a weekend in the afternoon and it was sure as heck busy! We had to drive around Deep Cove for a bit to find parking. We finally found street parking with no restriction signs meaning we could park there overnight. Make sure to check where you park when you go and make sure there are no restrictions or permit only signs.

After you have your paddleboard or kayak ready and your camping gear secured, you can then launch from the beach at Deep Cove. It is better to follow along the shoreline as there are many boats on the water as well as have a map of the area so you know where you are paddling to. The paddle can take an hour and a half depending on your speed, the conditions and the boats on the water. 

There is one point where you will have to cross the ocean to the other side where Twin Islands is located. Make sure to be mindful of the boats here and the waves, me and my friend stayed close to each other and tried to do that part fast. It can take a while though if the water is really choppy, which it was when we did it! 

Once you arrive to the island, you will see the dock when you paddle into Twin Islands. Make sure to take your paddleboard or kayak up with you as it can get in the way of others if you just leave it at the dock. You can then set up camp and choose to explore the second island if the tide is low as there will be a mini beach there where you can go check out!

Camping Options on The Northern Island

Twin Islands on the northern side has campgrounds throughout the island with designated tent pads and washrooms available. When you walk into the forest you will see some tent pads there and if they are not taken you can set up camp. If you love the ocean view and want a prettier camping spot, then keep following the trail north, you will see tent pads along the trail with a peak of the ocean.

Camp sites #19 and #20 offer the best ocean views on the island so check to see if they are available! We were lucky to snag one of the tent pads there as a group of guys let us take one as they were sleeping in hammocks for the night! We had the perfect ocean view!

Tips for Planning your Twin Islands Adventure

If you plan to make it to Twin Islands as it is one of the best paddling and camping trips in Vancouver, you should be well prepared: 

Make sure to plan ahead and get to Deep Cove early as it can be crowded with parking being difficult to find overnight parking, as well as many boats may be in the water by the time you set out.

It is also good to check the tide times as this can help you plan your adventure smoothly, if you need to set out later or earlier to make it back as well as explore the sea caves and beach at the second island. 

Make sure to bring plenty of snacks and enough water with you as there are no water sources on the island. So make sure you have enough to hydrate yourself as well as to cook your camping meals with. 

It is better to have a maps of the area you are paddling so you don’t paddle the wrong way and know when to cross the ocean to the other side.

While we did this trip on paddleboards I would recommend renting or bringing a kayak instead as you can do the paddling in less time and secure your gear in the kayak. 

Bring a dry bag for all your gear or plastic bags to put your stuff in so it does not get wet. I also brought my rain cover for my backpack and used that to keep the bottom of my bag dry on my paddleboard.

Make sure to take a sun hat, proper UV protective clothing and sunscreen. Remember to keep reapplying as the sun’s rays hitting the water can make you get sunburned more easily.
