The Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish is conveniently located just off the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99), making it easily accessible from Vancouver (approximately an hour’s drive depending on traffic) and Whistler.

From Vancouver, take the Sea to Sky highway along Squamish to get to the gondola, and if you are coming from Whistler, take the south side of the highway until you get past the Sea to Sky gondola, as there is nowhere to turn left there until you get to the lights after the gondola. For parking, there is paid parking available at the base when you get there. Since you will be in Squamish already, it’s an amazing start for many outdoor activities, including hikes such as the Stawamus Chief or Jurassic Ridge at Murrin Park, as well as swimming or paddling at Porteau Cove beach!

The Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish was officially opened to the public in May 2014, marking a huge milestone for Squamish tourism. The vision behind its construction was to provide accessible mountain experiences for individuals of all ages and abilities, fostering a deeper connection with the natural beauty of the Coast Mountains.

Tips for Planning Your Visit to the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish

Tickets are available for purchase when you get there, or you can purchase them online. You can purchase a day pass or an annual pass, depending on whether you want to visit more than once. You can view and purchase tickets here!

The gondola currently runs from 9-5 PM daily, and this can change depending on the season. Check the official website for changes here!

To avoid crowds, the best time to visit the Sea to Sky Gondola is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, if you can go on weekdays. The weather can be unpredictable sometimes when you go to higher elevations, so make sure to check the forecast and dress in layers, as the temperatures at the top of the gondola can be significantly cooler than at the base of it. 

What to Expect on Your Sea to Sky Gondola Ride

First of all, I want to say that during my visit, the staff were so friendly and accommodating. They helped us hop into a comfy gondola and got us ready for a 10-minute ride we wouldn’t forget! Those huge windows? They’re your ticket to stunning views of mountains and Howe Sound. Smooth, stable, and accessible for everyone, it’s the perfect way to start your mountaintop adventure. Remember to also have your camera ready as the views are amazing of Howe Sound, and the surrounding mountains while going up!

Scenic Views and Photo Opportunities

One of my favourite things about the Sea to Sky Gondola is the incredible views from both the ride up and the summit. As you go up and climb higher, you get to enjoy amazing views of Howe Sound, Sky Pilot Mountain, and Mount Habrich. I was quite surprised by how far you can see. At the top, by the Summit Lodge, there are view platforms where you can find a great spot to soak in the panoramic views if it is not crowded. For good photos, you can also visit during the Alpine Glow slot, which is from 3-5 PM, so you can soak up the golden hour light and get some amazing photos! Don’t forget to explore the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge; it’s another photo opportunity with those stunning mountains in the back, especially if they still have snow on them! 

Activities and Attractions at the Summit

Get ready, because the top of the Sea to Sky Gondola is like a giant playground! First of all, you have to walk across the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, I was blown away when I went.  Seriously, the views are insane – it’s like you’re floating above everything! If you love hiking like me, then rest assured, they’ve got some easy access trails for everyone. Want an easy stroll? Try the Panorama or Spirit Trails. Feeling adventurous? The Highline Trail will give you a workout.

After all that exploring, grab some food at the Summit Lodge – the patio views are unbeatable. And for families? They’ve got a playground! Oh, and if you’re feeling really brave, the Via Ferrata is a must-try. It’s like climbing on the side of a mountain, but super safe and unforgettable.

Whenever I head out to the outdoors, I try to keep things light and intentional, bringing only what I truly need to feel grounded, warm, and present.

Here’s what came with me on this trip:

My go-to hiking backpack – Just the right size for day hikes, with enough pockets to keep snacks, layers, and my camera within easy reach.

Cozy layers and socks – Cozy essentials like a fleece sweater, especially when the gondola ride takes you into cooler alpine air. Breathable, naturally odour-resistant, and perfect for layering.

Lightweight rain jacket – The Sea to Sky region is known for its moody weather shifts. I love having a packable rain layer so I can enjoy the mist without getting soaked.

Camera gear – For capturing those cinematic, fog-draped forest moments. I recently upgraded to the Canon R8 body for portability, and being lightweight, it’s perfect! I always bring an extra battery just in case.

Trusty hiking boots – Waterproof, grippy, and broken-in — a must for navigating forest paths and rocky viewpoints with ease.

A thermos of herbal tea + a journal – My favourite ritual lately has been sitting quietly at the summit, sipping something warm, and reflecting on whatever’s on my heart. Highly recommend bringing something comforting to enjoy when you pause.

Nearby Attractions and Accommodations

Making a day (or weekend!) of your Sea to Sky Gondola trip? Squamish is full of amazing spots nearby and is the ultimate outdoor haven! Think mountain biking on trails (totally recommended even if you are a beginner, as there are easy trails to follow at your own pace), kayaking, eagle watching, and hiking – you name it, Squamish has it. 

Some outdoorsy things I would suggest are a quick trip to Shannon Falls – it’s a super easy walk and the waterfall is just gorgeous, especially when the sun hits. Just make sure to go early to get parking as it gets busy. If you want more of a challenge, you can try the Stawamus Chief hike for some amazing views at the top. For places to stay, check out the Squamish Adventure Inn for a friendly vibe. It’s a hostel that also has private rooms available! Or you can choose the Sandman Hotel for a reliable stay. Trust me, you’ll leave Squamish with a ton of great fun memories.

After a day of exploring, unwind at local restaurants and breweries. I love going to Copper Coil, or Flipside Burgers (they have the best curly fries!). • Heat Warmers: I always like to keep these on hand as me and my friends get cold a lot on our adventures.

• Targhee IV Keen Hiking boots: I just got these boots and they are definitely an upgrade from my previous ones. I love the roomy toe box and the grip on them. I recently took them hiking around southern Utah and they held up really well so far!

• Waterfly Packable Backpack: This bag is perfect to take for travel or in your backpacking backpack for a small packable day pack. It folds down into a pouch and holds up pretty well.
• Travel Backpack: This backpack is my new favorite one! I recently flew with a budget airline and it met their personal item requirement size. The crazy thing is I was able to fit my hiking clothes, mini drone and a small camera in it. I will use this on future trips as I love the way it opens like a carry-on and the amount of items you can fit into it, especially with some compression sacks!
• Compression Sack: A must for compressing your sleeping bag, and clothes during travel. These bags can compress a lot of clothes down so it’s perfect for the mindful adventurer.
• Packing Cubes: Another great thing to have is packing cubes! I use them while travelling, backpacking and car camping as I hate when things are all over the place. These are so helpful for that and would make the perfect gift!
• SD Card Case: I finally got one of these and it’s a lifesaver as a photographer for when I need all my SD cards in one place. If you have micro SD cards or SD cards this is pretty handy as you will never use them!

Ever wondered what the ocean’s biggest fish is? Look no further than the whale shark, a massive creature reaching 60 feet and weighing as much as a tank! These gentle giants are filter feeders, meaning they strain plankton like a giant aquatic vacuum.

Hold on, a shark that doesn’t eat meat? Yup! Unlike most sharks known for their sharp teeth, whale sharks have tiny teeth they don’t use for feeding. Think of them as the ocean’s vegetarians, peacefully cruising at slow speeds.

So, whale sharks vs. sharks… what’s the difference? Imagine comparing a school bus to a skateboard. Whale sharks are HUGE compared to most sharks. Plus, they’re filter feeders, not hunters, and are known for their docile nature. You’re more likely to get a selfie with a whale shark than be its dinner!

What do Whale Sharks Eat? (Big Mouth, Tiny Appetite!)

Don’t let their size fool you! Whale sharks are vegetarians of the ocean. Forget razor-sharp teeth, they have a giant mouth with tiny teeth used for filtering, not feasting. Imagine a massive aquatic vacuum cleaner!

How does it work? As the whale shark swims, it opens its huge mouth, sucking in water. Special filters called gill rakers then trap tiny yummy things like plankton, krill, small fish, and even jellyfish. These microscopic morsels are the whale shark’s main food source! During my tour, I was snorkelling right in front of its mouth and it threw me off at first as it can look scary, but they are harmless.

The Geological Formation and Unique Features of Mt. Solmar

Millions of years ago, over time, the tides and the wind sculpted the landscape, leaving behind dramatic rock formations of Land’s End as well as the area there around Mt Solmar. Today, these features create a unique ecosystem and contribute to the mountain’s rugged beauty.

Mt Solmar: Cabo San Lucas Private Guided Hike

Would you hike up to see Cabo San Lucas from below? Mt Solmar is a private guided hike only because it passes through private property. The man who lives there named Enrique hosts free daily morning and (sometimes) evening hikes, and let me tell you he sure has quite a few dogs on the property. So if you are scared of dogs, this hike is not for you, as you will be hiking with many dogs on the way up. The hike however is so worth your effort for the panoramic views.

How Hard is the Mt Solmar Hike?

The hike is not hard but gets steep near the top where you may need to use your hands, but it is doable for most and the views are pretty epic from the top. It takes about 45 minutes to get up to the top depending on your pace. Once you are at the top you can enjoy the views, eat a snack and take pictures at the different viewpoints.

You can spend time as much time as you need to enjoy the views and take it all in as it is a more relaxed hike and not rushed at all. Once Enrique gives the heads up to go back down, take your time as he casually leads you to take an easier route to the bottom which is not that long.

The Best View of Cabo San Lucas?

Seeing the different shades of blue in the water was amazing and I would do this hike again just for the views. You hike up to 440 ft to the top of Mt Solmar, where you can see panoramic views all around the cliffs overlooking Lover’s Beach, Land’s End to Solmar Beach on the other side of the town. This hike should be at the top of your list for the best views in Cabo San Lucas.

The Best Time to Visit Mt. Solmar

Cabo’s weather can be a double-edged sword. Aim for the sweet spot: November to April offers comfortable temperatures perfect for hiking. We went in early February and enjoyed great sunny weather on the hike. Avoid the scorching summer months (May to October) unless you’re an early riser who enjoys conquering trails before the sun gets too intense.

What Time is the Mt Solmar Guided Hike? 

The hike is hosted at 8 AM daily from Sunday to Friday with no hikes on Saturday – so make note on your trip! This can also change as Enrique may offer some more times in the afternoon and for sunsets. You can check before your trip here on this Facebook group. We aimed to go in the morning and arrived there at 8 AM as Enrique started letting people through the gates at 8:15 AM.

Local Wildlife and Flora

Mt. Solmar isn’t just about the views; it’s also a haven for diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for playful desert cottontail rabbits scampering through the undergrowth or majestic hawks soaring on the thermals. The unique ecosystem also fosters a variety of cacti and desert flora, adding a splash of colour to the landscape. Watch out for the cacti and plants on the way up of the hike as hurting or falling on them would cause an injury. Stay on the path and follow Enrique and you will be protected from the elements.

There is no official trailhead for this hike. Mt Solmar hike is located on private property. I have included the map above on where to go to start the Mt Solmar hike. It is located at the dog training camp. The pin is called “The Hike, ” which is the starting point on Enrique’s property after he lets you through the gate.

What to Pack for Mt Solmar Hike

You want to have good grippy shoes or hiking boots for this hike. As it is quite rocky, it is easy to hurt your feet. Pack a mini first aid kit in your pack like this one! Make sure to bring enough water for the hike. If it is a hot day then you will be quite sweaty. Also, remember to wear sunscreen and a sun hat to protect yourself from the harsh sun.

Safety Tips and Precautions for Hiking Mt. Solmar

Conquering Mt. Solmar is an exhilarating experience, but safety should always be your top priority.  Pack proper footwear with good traction, bring plenty of water, and wear sun protection. Be aware of the weather conditions and avoid hiking during extreme heat.  Letting someone know your planned route and estimated return time is also a wise precaution.

Several hotels, hostels, and campsites nestle around Mt. Solmar in Cabo San Lucas. Choose your base camp based on your needs, whether it’s a luxurious hotel with all the amenities or a budget-friendly hostel with a social atmosphere.

VanDusen Botanical Garden

Here, you’ll find everything from delicate single blossoms to impressive double blooms, offering endless photo opportunities. While the blossoms may be blooming, the garden is usually fully in bloom a bit later on depending on the weather. The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival also hosts Sakura Days here in April, with Japanese cultural activities.

Queen Elizabeth Park

This sprawling park boasts stunning views alongside its cherry blossoms. Capture breathtaking panoramas with the city skyline and snow-capped mountains as your backdrop, or get up close and personal with the delicate blooms.

Nitobe Memorial Garden

One of my favourite spots to see the blossoms blooming is the Marinaside Crescent. Taking a walk alongside the seawall and enjoying the city views with the blossoms trees is a sight to remember. Go Shopping at the Mall

If you are in Houston for the weekend and if you are downtown, Main Street Square is the main shopping street that has restaurants, shops, and cafes. It is a nice place to spend a weekend exploring, eating, and shopping in the downtown core with a nice view of a water fountain. 

Another place in Houston you can spend the weekend shopping in is The Galleria which is the biggest mall in Houston. Located in the Uptown District of Houston with restaurants, shops, and a skating rink, you can easily enjoy a nice weekend here. 

Memorial City Mall, located in West Houston with just a 15-minute drive from downtown, is also great to visit to go shopping this weekend. This mall is more on the metropolitan side, less crowded, and with a variety of shops and restaurants to choose from.

Visit the Beach in Houston this weekend

Located near the Gulf of Mexico, Houston has many beaches that are worth visiting if you are looking for something to do this weekend.

If you are close to downtown then Sylvan Beach is the closest to visit for the weekend. This beach is perfect to relax with your friends before hitting up the city after. 

If you are with your family then make sure to check out Stewart Beach. This beach has a playground, rentals, public washrooms, and lifeguards which are perfect for the entire family to enjoy the weekend in Houston. 

El Jardin Beach and Jamaica Beach are both nice to check out as well where you can take in the natural scenery and relax this weekend.

Check out a New Restaurant in Houston

Houston has a ton of restaurants that you can check out if you are here for the weekend. With a multicultural diverse population, you will be sure to find anything you are craving this weekend! Some restaurants to put on your radar are Nancy’s Hustle, State of Grace, and Lucille’s. While there are many highly-rated restaurants in Houston, I suggest looking up what is near you on Google and choosing from the top-rated ones as there are many to choose from!

Green Discovery or Buffalo Bayo, Houston has a variety of parks to visit on your trip and they are worth checking out over the weekend. Green Discovery is located downtown and is a nice way to check out the downtown core of the city. Another park called Buffalo Bayo is located in west downtown in the heart of the city. With gardens, walking tours, hiking, and biking trails you will be sure to have a great time this weekend by exploring and enjoying this park.

Check out the Nightlife in Houston

Houston is home to a vibrant nightlife scene. Both midtown and the Downton area have many bars and clubs which you can choose from this weekend. With arcades, bars, live music, and dance clubs, you have a variety of options to choose from. Some popular places to go are Dave and Buster’s arcade, Barbarella for dancing and if you like Jazz music then check out Ready Room.

What is the Las Vegas Sphere?

Sphere 255 Sands Ave Las Vegas NV 89169  

The Sphere stands over 366 feet tall and 516 feet wide and is composed of over 4,00 mega-reflective panels. During the day, it gleams brilliantly in the desert sunlight. At night, it comes alive with colourful, dynamic LED lighting shows visible up and down the Strip just make sure you don’t get distracted as my friend was telling me that vehicle accidents have gone up since it was built! 

Inside the Sphere, you can find some exhibits featuring interactive installations and multi-sensory displays. The exhibit is a 2 part multi-sensory experience and will encourage you to question reality and perspective in an imaginative, dreamlike environment. Once you check in and get inside you go through the exhibits first before you can get food from the cafeterias or go to your seating in the theatre. Guests usually have 30 minutes to explore the exhibits once they are inside and get any refreshments from the cafeteria before their show starts.

The Sphere provides one of the most unique and engaging exhibits in Las Vegas. This giant mirrored orb houses an art experience designed to challenge your senses, perspective, and understanding of the world around you. It’s an absolute must-see for art and tech lovers visiting Las Vegas and I think it is worth doing one time if it is in your budget.

Ticketing

• Tickets will be available for purchase online through Ticketmaster once shows are announced. Check the Sphere’s website for the event calendar.
• Ticket prices will vary depending on the show. Expect premium pricing for top-tier concerts and events. We paid about USD 169 each to watch Postcard from Earth. Buy tickets online here.
• If buying tickets from a third-party reseller, ensure they are authorized Sphere ticket vendors to avoid fraud.

Parking

• The Sphere will have a dedicated parking structure with over 4,500 spaces.
• Pre-purchasing parking is recommended as spots may sell out for major events. Rideshare drop-off areas will also be available. You can check out the parking info and rates here.
• Parking rates differ at certain events and times but I found that they range from $40-$75 or more based on event demand and space.

Transportation

• The Sphere’s location is on the Las Vegas Strip, and it is super easy to access by monorail, bus, ride share, taxi, or limo services.
• The closest monorail stop I found is at the Flamingo/Caesars Palace station, about a half-mile walk to the Sphere. You can book tickets here for the monorail there.
• RTC buses and the Strip route stop nearby at Palms Place.
• Rideshare pickup and dropoff zones are designated near the entrance by the parking area.

Accessibility

• I found that the Sphere is designed with accessibility in mind with wheelchair ramps, elevators, and seating options as well as staff inside to assist.
• Accessible parking spaces can be reserved when purchasing parking passes online.
• Guest services staff are always available to assist guests with disabilities.
• Service animals are permitted inside the sphere.

Catching a Show at the Sphere in Vegas

The Las Vegas Sphere is set to become one of the most unique concert and entertainment venues in the world as it is one of the largest event structures. This futuristic-looking sphere has a capacity for up to 18,600 guests and will host a wide variety of musical performances, comedy shows, theatre productions, and other live entertainment.

Some of the highlight features that make the Sphere unlike any other venue include:

• A unique spherical architecture with massive LED panels on the exterior that can display visual effects synchronized with the show happening inside. This essentially makes the outside of the building part of the show for spectators passing by.
• An immersive interior with state-of-the-art audio and visual technology to enhance the entertainment experience, including high-resolution screens and surround sound.
• Configurable seating arrangements allow for different setups like full 360-degree arena style, semi-arena, end-stage, or floor seating only. This flexibility allows the Sphere to accommodate different types of events.
• Performances by top headlining musicians, bands, comedians, theatre productions, and other forms of live entertainment. The exact performer lineup has not been announced yet but will likely include big names. Currently, U2 is holding residency until March 2024.

Attractions Near the Sphere in Vegas

The Sphere’s prime location right off the Las Vegas Strip puts it near many of the city’s top attractions and entertainment options. Within walking distance or a quick rideshare trip are world-class hotels, casinos, restaurants, shows, and unique experiences you won’t find anywhere else.

Some highlights located near the Sphere include:

• The Venetian – This lavish hotel and casino features stunning architecture, canals with gondola rides, upscale shopping, and restaurants from famous chefs. It’s home to amazing shows and top headliners.
• The LINQ – This open-air entertainment district offers the High Roller observation wheel, zip lining down Fremont Street, and lively bars and restaurants. Check out virtual reality at The LINQ Promenade.
• Caesars Palace – An iconic Las Vegas resort with Roman statues and fountains everywhere you look. Check out the massive casino or see renowned shows like Absinthe.
• The Forum Shops at Caesars – A high-end shopping mall with 160 stores, restaurants, and attractions like the Fall of Atlantis animatronic show.
• The Park – Lively dining and entertainment district between Park MGM and T-Mobile Arena. Features casual eateries and live music.

With so much surrounding the Sphere, it’s easy to combine a show with other things to do on the strip, all without needing a car or lengthy walks between attractions. The Sphere’s location enhances any Vegas trip.

Other Top Things to Do on the Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas Strip is where most of the action happens in Vegas. This 4-mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard contains most of the major resort casinos, top shows, attractions, nightlife hotspots, restaurants, and shopping in the city. Here are some of the top things to do on the Las Vegas Strip:

See the Fountains at Bellagio – This breathtaking water show takes place in front of the Bellagio resort with jets choreographed to music. Shows take place every 30 minutes in the evenings.

Marvel at the Eiffel Tower replica at Paris Las Vegas – Take a ride up 50 stories for amazing views. This half-scale replica of the real Eiffel Tower in Paris is a stunning landmark on the Strip. Enjoy French cuisine, some drinks and pastries as you enjoy the view from the top.

Watch street performers at The LINQ Promenade – See hilarious sidewalk acts and performers along this lively outdoor shopping district between The LINQ and Flamingo casinos.

Party at Omnia Nightclub – One of the hottest nightclubs in Vegas located at Caesars Palace with famous resident DJs like Calvin Harris.

See the Mirage Volcano explode – The iconic Mirage volcano erupts with lights, fire, and music shows multiple times each night. A classic Vegas act.

Explore casinos – There’s no shortage of casinos like Caesars Palace, The Cosmopolitan, and Aria where you can try your luck at slots, table games, and sports betting.

Watch a Cirque du Soleil production – See a mind-blowing acrobatic show like “O” at Bellagio, “Mystere” at Treasure Island, or another production on the Strip.

Go on the High Roller observation wheel – Get amazing views of the Strip from this 550-foot tall Ferris wheel located at The LINQ.

In my opinion, the Las Vegas Sphere at The Venetian is an amazing architectural structure, offering visitors an unparalleled 2 part immersive experience. As the world’s largest sphere structure, it captivates with its exterior and the dynamic LED shows, as well as the thought-provoking exhibits within. My point of view encounter left an indelible mark, ranking it among the most memorable experiences in Las Vegas that I have ever experienced.

It is not just the LED lights, the Sphere serves as an amazing entertainment venue, which will most likely host top-tier concerts, comedy shows, and theatrical productions in the coming months after U2’s residency that ends in March 2024. I also highly recommend the show we watched which was Postcard From Earth, which was an unforgettable experience, especially if you love nature like me. Surrounded by iconic attractions on the Strip, the Sphere’s central location beckons exploration, making it a must-see destination that seamlessly integrates with the vibrant tapestry of Las Vegas entertainment.

Ever since growing up and living in BC, I always dreamed of seeing Tofino, watching everyone else visit just made me nostalgic for that oceanside feeling. Finally one day I just decided to plan a trip with my girlfriend and visit during the storm-watching season as I thought it would be less touristy and crowded. Storm-watching in Tofino, a place that is on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island, was a magical storm-watching adventure during the off-season months that I will get into more in this post!

You probably heard of Tofino a lot if you are in BC but there is another town not far off called Ucluelet which is also worth visiting in my opinion and it is only 30 minutes away from Tofino! Please keep reading for information on both of these beautiful places.

The Thrill of Storm Watching

Whether you choose to cozy up in a beachfront stay, venture out to explore the many unique beaches, witness storm watching from the safety of a cliffside viewpoint, or enjoy them all, Tofino and Ucluelet promise an unforgettable experience for anyone visiting!  

So last minute I decided to do a spontaneous two-day weekend trip from Vancouver to Tofino with one of my girlfriends for the storm-watching season. It was my very first time in Tofino and I absolutely would love to go back again! I will be sharing details in this post of what we did so you can plan your trip accordingly! So grab your rain gear and embrace the stormy beauty of these ultimate storm-watching destinations. 

Best Times for Storm Watching

The best time to go storm-watching in Tofino is from November through March, with December and January usually being the most active months. I decided to do my trip in mid-November. We got lucky as the weather wasn’t too stormy so we got to enjoy other activities as well.

These months create the best conditions for stormy weather – perfect for storm-watching in Tofino! Be aware that the weather can be unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to check local forecasts and be flexible with your travel plans to get the best out of your trip.

Weather Conditions and Safety Tips

While storm watching can be a thrilling experience, it’s important to prioritize safety and be aware of weather conditions. Stormy weather can bring heavy rain, high winds, and dangerous waves. Dress warmly, wear waterproof clothing, and bring appropriate gear such as sturdy footwear and rain gear. Stay away from exposed areas, cliffs, and rocks near the water as they can be slippery and unsafe. 

I highly advise you to stay a safe distance from the shoreline to avoid sudden waves or debris. Even if there is a photo opportunity or a better viewing point, always take into consideration that waves can sneak up on you while you are on the rocks. Trust me you do not want to be hitting rocks if a wave catches you as that won’t end well. 

There are many places you can safely view the shoreline that I will mention later on. Always keep an eye on the weather forecast/tide forecast and follow warnings or advisories issued by local authorities. You will see that many beaches have warning signs so make sure to follow them! Safety should be the top priority when enjoying the power of nature.

So reminder again that when you go storm watching, it is important to always make sure you follow safety protocols at all times as waves can be unpredictable. 

Top Spots for Storm-Watching in Tofino

Tofino has many incredible viewpoints to witness the raw beauty of storm watching and I am so glad I was able to visit most of them on my trip!

One of the most popular spots is Long Beach, tofino’s longest beach offering a majestic expanse of sand with dramatic waves crashing against the shoreline. Chesterman Beach is another popular choice, with its sandy stretches and sweeping ocean views.

For a different perspective, head to Radar Hill, where you can enjoy panoramic vistas and observe the storm from higher ground while getting in some steps for the day. 

Cox Bay Beach is another great area to storm watch and if the weather permits I highly recommend that you check out the Cox Bay Lookout viewpoint. It is a bit of a muddy steep hike up but worth it for the stunning views.

The Wickaninnish Beach provides excellent vantage points, along with sea stacks and towering cliffs adding to the breathtaking scenery. You can head to the Kwisitis Visitor Centre (note that it is closed right now) but you can get on to the viewing deck to watch some waves crashing, it is quite scenic and probably the safest spot to storm watch in the area. 

Top Spots in Ucluelet for Storm-Watching

With Ucluelet being about 30 minutes away from Tofino, it makes sense to check out both areas for storm watching. One of the most iconic spots is the Wild Pacific Trail. The one we did was Lighthouse Loop and there are tons of viewpoints along the way which you can stop and storm watch. We arrived at sunrise and it was gorgeous and not busy at all. It is truly magical and I highly recommend this area to explore. You can make it as long as you like as you do not have to do the full loop. 

You can continue to do the Wild Pacific Trail to Rocky Bluff where you continue along the trail through forest and the coastline, you will be able to go down to the rocks if there is a safe place to do so and enjoy watching the waves. 

If you are looking for another easy one then the Big Beach trail to Rocky Beach also has views of the beach and shoreline. 

Whichever spot you choose, be prepared to be amazed by the mesmerizing power of the stormy coast of Tofino and Ucluelet.

Just remember if you head to the trails in Pacific Rim National Park, you will need to purchase a park pass. You can get a daily one or a 4-hour slot for beach walking. Don’t forget to explore the little town of Tofino, visit the local cafes, and check out some of the restaurants. I loved the quaint little gift shops in Tofino and recommend checking them out when you are in town! Are you looking to brighten up your hikes and social feeds with some fall colours? Well, I have listed some of the best fall hikes near Vancouver that have the prettiest fall foliage that you can do! Fall in the mountains makes the bushes and trees pop with different reds, yellows, and orange hues, it is the perfect time to get away from the city and explore fall near Vancouver.

Top Fall Hikes Near Vancouver for Nature Lovers

The following hikes are some of my favourite best fall hikes near Vancouver that I have done over the past few years and I look forward to doing them each year. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do and get a chance to experience fall colors in Vancouver!

1. Lindeman Lake

Lindeman Lake is located in Chilliwack and while it’s a gorgeous hike itself, it is so endearing when the subtle fall colours hit. Even with the popular stunning views of the changing blue water colour, Lindeman Lake is a short easy hike up to see the fall colours that you need to add to your list. This area is pretty in all seasons but I would say that fall is a different vibe!

2. Elk Mountain

Elk Mountain is a gorgeous hike to do in the fall, while I enjoy hiking it seasonally, I think it looks the best with the fall colours. This hike is located in Chilliwack which is about an hour’s drive from Vancouver. You can complete the hike within 4 hours round trip. The mountain has a trail that leads up to a small viewpoint and then an alpine meadow with views of Mt. Baker and the North Cascades in the distance. You can continue hiking along the Thurston trail if you want to see more of the mountain views.

3. Flora Peak

Flora Peak is a stunning hike to do during the fall near Vancouver. Be sure to bring your camera! It’s not an easy trail by any means as the elevation gain is a lot making it steep, but it is worth it, just take your time and start early. This hike takes you to an elevation of 1307 meters and offers panoramic views of the Fraser Valley and the surrounding mountains.

The trail starts at the Lindeman Lake parking lot and winds its way through the forests and opens up to the alpine. As you ascend, you’ll be greeted by the vibrant hues of fall foliage, creating a stunning contrast against the clear blue sky and lake in the distance. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way, as this area is home to black bears.

Once you reach the summit of Flora Peak, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of mountains, the lake, and the valley! Take a moment to soak in the beauty of the Fraser Valley. This is a hike that will leave you feeling inspired and connected to the natural world.

4. Frosty Mountain

One of my favourite and most classic larch hikes to do on the lower mainland. Frosty mountain trail is the closest to Vancouver where you can see the golden larches. Note that this trail gets crazy busy during larch season so make sure you plan to get to the parking lot early, especially on weekends. The best time to see the larches are beginning of October to mid-October, you can check the Manning Park Resort for more information as they usually post updates on their social media of when the larches start turning yellow.

The trail is not that challenging until you reach the meadows with the larches, if you decide to continue to the summit of Frosty, then be mindful of falling rocks. It is quite steep and there are lots of big loose rocks on your way up. Be advised this is not for people who have a fear of heights. Once you are in the meadows, you will have views of the larches, surrounding mountains, and the cascade mountains. It is totally worth it do this hike just for the larches.

5. Zupjok Peak

Here you can see vibrant shades of red and orange from the bushes, it is unique compared to the other hikes in this list. The Coquihalla region always comes to life in the fall and it is the perfect time to explore this area if you are new to it. It is about 2 hours drive from Vancouver but definitely worth the trip!

6. Yak Peak

Also located in the Coquihalla recreation area this is a more challenging hike that has the same vibrant fall shades as Zupjok. This hike is quite steep and should not be done in wet conditions. If you are afraid of heights I would not recommend this. But if you are looking for a short challenge with amazing views, give this one a try.

When we got up to the summit we saw a paraglider with his dog which was pretty cool! You can also hike to Nak Peak which is right beside it or just to the saddle of the two peaks as you still get amazing views and the fall colours.

7. Yellow Aster Butte

I wanted to include this here as this hike had me stunned when I did it for fall with the amazing colours. This hike is only about a 2-hour drive from Vancouver (you do need to cross the border into Washington from Abbotsford.) To get to Yellow Aster Butte trail, you can make it in pretty much any vehicle as long as you are slow and careful (we took my VW Golf). You also need to get a recreation pass which you can purchase an online day pass for by clicking here.

While not difficult but moderate, the Yellow Aster Butte trail has views of the surrounding Mt Baker area. stunning fall colours, along the trail as you go up, and you get to hike up to a viewpoint with massive peaks in the background.

8. Cathedral Provincial Park (Rim Trail)

Update – Cathedral Provincial Park is currently closed due to wildfire

Nestled in the heart of the Okanagan-Similkameen region, Cathedral Provincial Park is a hidden gem that truly comes alive during the fall season. With its rugged terrain and stunning alpine meadows, this hike offers a mesmerizing display of the golden yellow larches. As you hike through the park, you’ll be surrounded by towering peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and vibrant foliage.

One of the most popular trails in Cathedral Provincial Park is the Rim Trail. This 18.8-kilometer loop takes you along the rim of the park, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. There are no cars allowed in the park so you will need to book a shuttle to get in. There is also camping and lodging available. You can get more details by clicking here.

Essential Items to Pack for Fall Hikes

Planning what to wear when you are hiking for fall is important as it is a shoulder season, and you want to be prepared for sun exposure, unexpected cold drafts, wind, rain, and snow. Especially since climate change has made the weather quite wonky recently. When you start hiking it may be warmer at the bottom and colder as well as it being windier at the top, so layers are important here! 

You can check out my high-altitude backpacking checklist for more details on what kind of clothes you would wear hiking or backpacking in higher elevations and what to bring here. But as you embark on your fall hiking adventures, it’s essential to pack the right gear to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. For fall I recommend some essential pieces: 

Layered clothing: Fall weather can be unpredictable, so dress in layers to adjust to changing temperatures. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating mid-layer, and top it off with a waterproof outer layer to protect against rain. I usually run hot so I still wear leggings, but you can get fleece-lined or thicker leggings. You can also bring a fleece as it is an easy layer to pack and keeps you warm while wicking away moisture. I also bring a beanie with me during the fall hiking season and long warm socks.

Sturdy hiking boots: A good pair of hiking boots with ankle support is essential for navigating uneven terrain and providing stability.

Snacks and water: Stay fueled and hydrated during your hike by packing lightweight snacks and plenty of water.

Navigation tools: Bring a map, compass, or GPS device to ensure you stay on the right track and don’t get lost.

First aid kit: Accidents can happen, so be prepared with a basic first aid kit that includes bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers.

Microspikes: There could be snow at higher elevations already in the fall so make sure to take your micro-spikes on your fall hikes.

Gloves: It’s always good to keep some warm gloves and hand warmers with you as it can be chilly in the fall hiking in the mountains.
